Top 5 Swimming Pool Trends For 2008

Every year different pool trends and building themes emerge as homeowners rush to start building their new pools before Memorial Day, the unofficial start of Summer. Here are few pool building trends for 2008:

1. Infinity Edge, Negative Edge Pools

An infinity edge is constructed so that water flows over one or more sides of the pool into a catch basin and is then re-circulated back into the pool. Since the edge of the pool seems to disappear, this type of edge is ideal for backyards with city, ocean or other scenic views. An infinity edge also adds an exciting visual element to level yards and lots by providing a reflection of the surrounding landscape in the surface of the pool. Typically, infinity edge swimming pools are more on the high end and not for budget conscious homeowners.

2. Specialty Finishes and Mosaic Tiles

Glass tile is currently the hottest — and the most expensive — finish for those in the high-end pool market. In the past, glass tile was used in high end bathrooms and kitchens, but today pool builders and pool owners are taking that application to the pool. Glass tiles come in a rainbow of colors, some with unique swirls, bubbles and shading, and are often used to create custom mosaics. Choices and styles range from contemporary to Mediterranean, from retro to minimalist.

3. Beach Entries

A beach entry refers to an edge or entry that gradually slopes from the deck into the water, like a ramp, becoming deeper with each step. Because there are no stairs or ladders to navigate, a beach entry is ideal for families with young children. Beach-entry pools can only be installed in-ground and they often require a much longer allocation of land. If you can manage it, this can be a very rewarding kind of pool. Following the National Spa & Pool Institute’s recommended slope of 1 foot drop for every 7 feet of run, you’ll need a 21-foot-long beach just to reach 3 feet of depth. Using a steeper slope isn’t an option. It could be uncomfortable and even dangerous for users.

4. Water Fountains

Fountains and rock waterfalls are also an effective way to set the mood around the pool. Pool fountains create a sound shield for your pool and also help keep it clean. Foaming fountains mix water and air for a frothy, mushroom-head effect. Rock waterfalls come in many shapes and configurations. Some opt for a prefabricated, one-piece unit that sits at the pool’s edge. Rock waterfalls can also be very elaborate. Rocks with built-in fountains can rise out of the pool or surround it, transforming the setting into a secluded area.

5. Fire Features

Many pool designers like to join fire and water in their building themes. The mesmerizing flame from fire accents or tiki torches around the pool area add great effects to the poolside atmosphere. At night, fire also adds a unique feel to your backyard oasis, while providing additional light and heat. If you have little ones in your family, you might want to think twice about adding fire to your backyard swimming pool – always think of safety first!
